Baby’s First Steps

There is no ‘normal’ age for those first independent steps, but they will possibly happen close to baby’s first birthday. Walking at nine months is known – as is waiting until about eighteen months of age! Factors that include family genetics, baby’s weight, or baby’s levels of curiosity can play their part… however, your baby will gain the ability to walk when he or she is ready.

You may be surprised to learn that your baby had a ‘walking’ reflex when first born! A new-born will make ‘walking’ movements if held upright with his or her feet touching a hard surface! This instinct is soon lost though, and baby must build the skills that lead to walking from the very beginning:babyplay26

First, baby must build muscle strength and control throughout his or her body. Controlling the head and neck come at the very beginning. Gradually, baby will learn to sit unaided – at around seven months old – then other skills will be gained and practised that develop into crawling or wriggling along, or shuffling on the bottom.

As baby’s strength, skills and confidence build, he or she will like being helped to stand, and later will begin using the furniture or your legs as aids to getting up onto his or her feet unaided – maybe bouncing up and down for a while, before letting go and plonking back down to sit on the floor.

The next stage is usually ‘cruising’ sideways while holding on to the furniture, graduating to holding on with just one hand. Well-made push-along toys that are very difficult to tip over are available, and can aid balance and confidence at this time.babyPlay5

Finally, the day will come when your baby takes those first, wobbly, independent steps – with each foot almost going its own way! With practice, he or she will gain more strength and control – though be prepared for a few tumbles, stay nearby, and make sure that baby is practising in a safe spot where a fall will not result in injury. Your encouragement will build baby’s confidence, and try to ignore the inevitable little tumbles and trips, as making a fuss could make him or her fearful of walking alone.

There is really no need for shoes at this stage, as baby will likely be ‘walking’ only indoors, or perhaps on a soft lawn in the garden. Later, when walking outside, he or she will need some foot protection – so now is the time to find a good shoe shop that specialises in children’s shoes. Have your child’s feet carefully measured to get the right fitting and the support necessary. Leather allows feet to breathe, and buckle, lace, or Velcro fastenings will hold your child’s foot firmly in the correct position. Never put your baby in second-hand shoes, and do have his or her feet measured every two months – they will grow and change rapidly, and the correct shoes are vital for healthy foot development, and to make sure your child walks comfortably and well.
