Your Baby’s Sleeping Pattern
Ideally, your baby will easily establish a good sleeping pattern that will give him or her (and you) plenty of rest. Sleep is an important part of baby’s growing process – and important to you so that you are refreshed and able to cope with your own tasks.
Your baby’s sleeping patterns may differ from those of other babies (and amounts of sleep will change as baby gets older). Some babies fall asleep easily – often in the middle of a feed – and sleep soundly for hours, while others need time to get off to sleep, and then may sleep fretfully, or for shorts periods only.
It is extremely helpful to establish a good sleeping pattern early on with a regular and consistent routine. Keep naps, feeds and bedtime to the same times every day, and ‘set the scene’ with calm, quiet surroundings and closed curtains or low lighting.
And when baby seems sleepy, put him or her into the cot to fall asleep alone – using rocking or breastfeeding to get baby to sleep could result in a habit that will be difficult to change. You will come to know your baby’s different sounds – whether a cry is hunger, tiredness or distress – so if baby cries, wait outside the door or sit nearby for a while to see if he or she falls asleep.
At between 6 and 9 months of age, your baby should have about 14 hours of sleep per day – with night-time sleeping periods lasting up to seven hours, and morning and afternoon naps of 90 minutes to 2 hours at a time.
At 9 to 12 months, your baby will ideally be sleeping for 10 or 12 hours at night, and having two daytime naps of 90 minutes to 2 hours.
