How to Puree Baby Food

Making homemade food purees for your baby is very rewarding and quite simple.

You can also have fun being creative with combinations of foods, as long as they are appropriate for your baby’s age and development stage – puree sweet potatoes and apples together, for example. And incorporating fresh breast milk or formula will give added nutrition as well as being a familiar taste for your baby.

Here’s how to get the best results…

    • Prepare and cook the food using your favourite method – steaming or baking are best – and allow it to cool a little.
    • Put an appropriate amount* of the cooked food into your blender or food processor bowl (or use a stick mixer or immersion blender with a suitable bowl or container).
    • Only add enough of the cooking liquid for the machine to puree properly – this adds back nutrients that leach into the cooking liquid, though do not use cooking liquid from carrots or other high-nitrate vegetable if your baby is under 7 months of age.
    • If you are pureeing baked foods, use homemade stock, formula, or plain water as a pureeing liquid – you can also use fresh breast milk, but never use previously-frozen breast milk if you intend to freeze your puree.HowToPuree
  • Start your machine to process the vegetables or fruits to the desired texture – switching the machine off occasionally to push down any pieces that are not getting processed.
  • Add more of the liquid only if you need to for the processing, but don’t make the puree too thin – if you freeze the food it’s better to thin it after thawing.

*Process your foods in small batches – no appliance can do the job properly if it is asked to cope with too much at once,so fill the container less than half way and just add a little liquid at first.
