Mango

Baby Food for baby

Mango’s are a super-nutritious tropical fruit, mango3and may be introduced into baby’s diet at around 10 months of age. However, as they belong to the cashew/pistachio group of plants, if there is any family history of allergy to these, or any nuts, you should consider introducing mango’s very carefully – and certainly discuss it with baby’s doctor or paediatrician. Some skin rashes are also associated with mango, and there is a rare allergy related to contact with mango skin.

Mango’s are good for baby (and you):

Some of the highest levels of carotenoids in any fruit are found in mango’s. Carotenoids protect against heart disease and some cancers – and the common cold. Mango pulp is extremely rich in vitamin A, and contains lots of vitamins B and C, together with iron, potassium and protein.

Mangos are low-fat, low-calorie, high-fibre wonder fruit.

Hints on buying and storing:mango1

  • Buying organic is a personal choice – mango is not on the ‘dirty dozen’ list, so not highly contaminated with pesticides.
  • Press fruit gently – it should be slightly soft (unripe mango will ripen in a warm room).
  • Colour may be green, red/orange, or golden yellow, depending on variety.
  • Skin should have no spotting or bruising.
  • A ripe mango has a distinct ‘warm’ fragrance.

Tips on cooking:

  • No need to cook.
  • Wash, peel, and slice flesh away from the stone to dice or mash.

Ideas for ways of including mango in your baby’s meals:

  • Mix with mashed or chopped avocado, banana, peach, melon, or blueberries.
  • Add to sweet potato.
  • Combine with chicken or pork dishes.
  • Mash or dice finely and mix into yogurt.

Please remember: Always consult your baby’s paediatrician or doctor about introducing new foods.
