Sweet potatoes come in several varieties, including a light-fleshed, brown-skinned variety that is similar to a white potato. In some countries the red-skinned, orange-fleshed variety of sweet potato is often confused with yam – a completely different plant.

Sweet potato is good for baby (and you):
Sweet potato provides some of the highest levels of Vitamins A and C, iron, calcium, folate, and copper of any vegetable. They are also high in beta carotene, vitamin E, fibre, and potassium… good health in a package!

Hints on buying and storing:

  • Look for medium-sized sweet potatoes that are undamaged and have no soft spots.
  • Choose ones that look fresh, rather than dull or shrivelled.
  • At home, keep in a cool, dark place for up to 2 weeks.
  • Do not store sweet potatoes in a refrigerator.

  • Baking in the oven will bring out natural sweet flavour and retain the most nutrients.
  • Bake in the skin, then scoop out the flesh when cool enough to handle.
  • Alternatively, peel, dice, then steam.

Ideas for ways of including sweet potato in your baby’s meals:

  • Add pureed sweet potato to homemade baby cereal – oatmeal (porridge), rice, barley.
  • Combine with pureed fruit – apple, peach, or pear.
  • Mix with pureed pumpkin, green beans, peas, carrot, parsnip or courgette (zucchini).
  • Add to cooked quinoa, lentils, brown rice.
  • Include in chicken, pork or beef dishes.
  • Blend into plain yogurt.
