4 Day Wait Rule

Four reasons why The 4 Day Rule is a wise idea…

  1. When you introduce any new food into your baby’s diet, The 4 Day Rule is a simple way of checking whether the new food causes any problems – such as an allergic reaction or digestive disorders.
  2. By introducing new foods one food at a time – with at least 4 days between each new food – you will quickly spot any troubles and have a good idea of what caused them.
  3. This is particularly important during the early stages of your baby’s changing diet.
  4. It is vitally important if there is any history of food allergy or intolerance in you or others in your family.

Remember: allergic reactions usually occur within 24 hours of eating a food, but digestive problems may take longer to make themselves known.

If you have any concerns, you should speak to your baby’s doctor, who may advise you to begin an elimination diet to pinpoint the problem – far easier if there are only a few foods to check.

Only introduce new foods to your baby early in the day.


If you introduce a new food to your baby in the afternoon or evening, and baby has a reaction to it, the very least of your problems will be a disturbed, uncomfortable night for your baby (and you!).

An allergic reaction may need urgent medical help, which is not so easy to get late in the day or at night – meaning that your baby could be at serious risk.

When your baby is enjoying several new foods that have been introduced using The 4 Day Rule -with no reaction to any of them – it is OK to‘mix and match’ them in a varied diet.

By the time your baby is 9 or 10 months old, he should be having quite a few different foods, and you will have identified and eliminated any problem ones. Now The 4 Day Rule will not be quite so important, but you should always be alert whenever you offer more new foods – especially those that are known to be allergy risks.

However, if there is a history of food allergy or intolerances in your family,you would be very wise to continue using The 4 Day Rule until your baby is at least 12 months of age. As always, consult closely with your baby’s doctor over any allergy issues.
