Storing Food Safely

When you have made a batch of healthy, homemade food for your Freezing3baby, it is then vitally important that you store it so that it will stay in perfect condition until you are ready to give it to baby.

Whether you want to refrigerate it for a few hours, or freeze it for a few weeks, you need to follow some simple steps to make sure that your refrigerator and freezer are always in good condition, and working efficiently at the correct temperatures for food safety.

Using your Refrigerator

  • Your refrigerator should always be kept at no more than 5C (40F). If the temperature is any higher than this, bacteria can grow and multiply, putting your baby’s health at risk.
  • Make sure that you maintain your refrigerator – keep the refrigerator interior clean, keep the grill at the front of the refrigerator clear and clean so that air can circulate to the condenser and brush or vacuum the condenser every 2-3 months. Your refrigerator will always run at the correct temperature, conserving energy and saving you money at the same time!

Using your FreezerFreezing1

  • Your freezer should never run at more than -15C (5F). An ideal temperature range is -18C(0F) to -15C(5F). Use a freezer thermometer to monitor the temperature.
  • Freezers operate more efficiently when they are quite full. If yours is getting a little empty, keep it ‘topped up’ with containers almost filled with water.
  • Baby food should be stored in the coldest part of your freezer – on the top shelf of an upright model, or at the bottom of a chest freezer.
